This week marks a significant milestone in my journey—a journey filled with uncertainty, fear, and self-doubt yet ultimately characterized by growth and triumph. I began my foray into the world of technology tentatively, unsure of my abilities and facing numerous challenges along the way.
Starting Small
My journey began with navigating the vast tech landscape through YouTube tutorials on how to code. Often, I found myself copying and pasting code snippets without truly grasping their intricacies. Despite this, participation in the Andela 2.0 Program provided me with a foundational understanding of Java, albeit accompanied by the struggles inherent in building my first currency converter app, devoid of mentorship or internship opportunities.
Navigating Educational Choice
Upon reaching my fourth year of university, I made the decision to enroll in a physical IT course, hopeful that it would provide me with the guidance I sought. However, the reality fell short of my expectations, leaving me disheartened. Undeterred, I persevered, even in the face of unforeseen challenges, such as laptop damage during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Embracing Opportunities Amidst Adversity
Despite setbacks, I remained steadfast in my pursuit of knowledge, transitioning to a software engineering course at Aptech. Here, I was introduced to the fundamentals of HTML, CSS, and Java, further solidifying my passion for technology. My journey continued amidst the demands of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), where I secured an internship in IT support and concurrently embarked on self-learning endeavors, delving into Flutter and discovering a newfound interest in data science.
Continuous Learning and Community Engagement
My thirst for knowledge led me to various online learning communities and WhatsApp groups, where I honed my skills in SQL and Python. Encouraged by the support of my peers, I seized opportunities such as scholarships for Udacity Nanodegree courses, further bolstering my confidence in my abilities.
Overcoming Obstacles and Seizing Opportunities
Luck finally shone upon me when I stumbled upon an entry-level opportunity as a data analyst within a bank. Despite initial setbacks, I refused to accept defeat, advocating for a role transfer to the data unit after completing training. Today, I stand as a testament to the power of perseverance and resilience, serving as a community manager for a data community where I strive to foster inclusivity and collaboration among members.
